Spelling
Spelling tests will be on Thursdays. Students that are unable to make at least a 70 will be retested on Friday, giving them one more day to study. Spelling lists will be sent home on the previous Friday of each week. Students will also be responsible for gluing spelling list in agenda on Friday.
Reading
This year we will be working on all aspects of reading and comprehending, as well as text features, context clues, main idea, summarizing, inferencing, etc. but if they love to read those things come so much easier. They do participate in the Accelerated Reading program. Each student will have an AR goal. Raz-kids is utilized in the class room as well as at home.
Math The first unit is Place Value, writing numbers in standard and word form as well as expanded notation. We will also cover money, time, multiplication, division, graphs, fractions, measurement, etc. Think through math is a great resource for students to use at school and at home.
Science
We will be learning about science safety and science tools. We will begin our unit on matter and states of matter. Every month we will also be completing Great Body Shop in order to meet our health requirement.
Social Studies
Third grade social studies is all about communities and people who made positive contributions along the way. We will be exploring how and why communities are formed and what caused changes over time. Also, we will study how Christmas is celebrated around the world. We will learn about great African-American leaders.
Cub Binder
Students will be bringing home this binder everyday. Please check your child's agenda everyday for behavior notes. Students will receive a sticker each day. If their behavior isn't up to expectations, I will write a note for the day. The citizenship grade is based on the number of behavior write-ups in the agenda.
Homework is sent home on Friday and it's due the following Friday
Spelling - Words will be glued in agendas. A spelling Tic-Tac-Toe will be sent home to help study their words every night in preparation for the spelling test on Thursday.
Reading - I send home a reading log for students to fill out. I want students to decide when and what they would like to read. When students have the freedom to choose a book they will enjoy reading which can lead to more reading in the future. I would like reading to be challenging and occasionally include a newspaper or magazine giving them a chance to explore community or world events.
Math - Math will be sent home every week along with a math log to fill out nightly. Please look over your student's math homework weekly and help as needed. Also, students are required to have mastered addition and subtraction basic facts. Please practice these facts with your child nightly (approx 5 min a night). Multiplication and division will begin midyear.
