Ms. Hellamns Named AAABSE Teacher of the Year!

Ft. Sam Houston Elementary School 4th grade teacher Ms. Veronica Hellamns was recently named the Alamo Area “Teacher of the Year” by the Alamo Area Alliance of Black School Educators (AAABSE). The award is given to a teacher who has best exemplified success in motivating students to a higher level of achievement in the field of education and who has demonstrated creativity and innovation.

Fifteen Bexar county teachers were nominated for this title and competed through a rigorous selection process that included recommendations from supervisors, parents, and peers. Nominees were also evaluated based upon their responses to merit and experience-based essay questions.  

Ms. Hellamns has 10 years experience in the field of education. She began her teaching career at St. Mary’s Magnet Academy in Columbus, Georgia.  In 2010, she joined the team at Ft. Sam Houston Elementary School as a Kindergarten teacher and later moved to the first grade team. She currently teaches 4th grade. As a member of the 4th grade team, Ms. Hellamns continues to  fulfill her mission to serve students by supporting their social, emotional, and academic development. FSH Elementary school principal, Dr. Tonya Hyde states that Ms. Hellamns is “a firecracker of a teacher. Her enthusiasm, passion, and love for students inspires them to their full potential.”

Ms. Hellamns has also been honored by KENS5 as their SACU/KENS5 Teacher of the Year. She contributes daily to her learning organization in her service, first to students and then as a teacher leader facilitating or participating in various committees.
