As we move into October, our character focus shifts to Trustworthiness! When we think of trustworthiness, we often think of honesty and reliability. But being trustworthy plays a much deeper role in a child’s development: it is the foundation of self-regulation and personal growth.
SEL Focus: How Trustworthiness Builds Self-Regulation
Self-regulation is the ability to monitor and manage our energy states, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Trustworthiness and self-regulation go hand-in-hand:
- Making Good Choices When No One is Looking: Being trustworthy requires internal control. When children choose to follow rules or tell the truth—even when it's tough—they are actively practicing impulse control and emotional regulation.
- Building Integrity: Trustworthy actions require kids to pause, reflect on their choices, and consider the consequences before reacting.
When children learn to be trustworthy, they build confidence and earn independence at home, at school, and in the community:
💡 Simple Ways to Reinforce Trustworthiness at Home
- Model Transparency: Talk aloud about your own choices and why keeping your word matters.
- Praise Honesty Over Perfection: When your child tells the truth about a mistake, praise their honesty first before addressing the behavior.
- Assign Age-Appropriate Responsibilities: Give your child routine tasks (like caring for a pet or setting the table) and celebrate their follow-through to build accountability.
